Those present:

Rudi van Zwaaij, Jim Southern, Gwen Hompoth, Les Shelton, Dave Florence, Jack McCuish, Cathy McLean, ....

We opened our meeting with Rudi's video on the May 6 Field trip. Much appreciated by all.

Then Rudi expressed the appreciation of the Society to Les Shelton for his many years of service, particularly as treasurer, and presented Les with a framed version of the Feb 26 fieldtrip group photo and a copy of "Now you're Logging" by Bud Griffiths.

Old Business

The safety railing for the front steps is now installed. Much thanks to Brian Crilly

The plan for the power outlets for Logger Sports is done. It features outside locked access. Work will be completed by end May.

Advertising: The museum brochure is still being printed; the colour posters are in place at the historical museum and tourist bureau; and the Peak's "Discover Powell River" was reviewed. Our ad and several pages present the museum favourably.

The historical videos that were ordered have arrived. Rudi reported they are all interesting and effective. At the end of the meeting we reviewed the 9 minute one on Logging spruce through aircraft production in W.W.II.

Steam Donkey Project

Rudi reported progress on the project at the May 6 fieldtrip.

bullet13 people attended and prepared the steam donkey for helicopter lift
bulletThree lifts by Oceanview Helicopters at 2 p.m. brought out many small artifacts, the water tank and the burner stack extension.

We would like to thank the following people and organizations:

bulletHowie McKamey and Goat Lake Forest Products for their support, particularly the heli-lift of tools in the early a.m..
bulletBill Tuba for his wit, as well as his torch work.
bulletGreg Voysey for organizing the final airlift with Helifor Industries Ltd.
bulletKevin Giles, and Paul Kutz of Weyerhaeuser for supplying some of the boats

Dave showed a printout of the Website additions that feature the Steam Donkey project to date. More will be added as photos are developed.

Next Steps:

bulletMark Hasslet will truck the parts flown out May 6 to Bill Tuba's place where the stack may be strengthened
bulletHelifor will give us 1-2 days notice in the next few weeks for lift of the main pieces to Shaker Bay. Jim will call members for a work party at Shaker Bay.
bulletShaw will video the lift from Shaker Bay; a second video will shot from a boat on the lake.

Rudi showed the latest version of Steve Bowen's Museum Logo. All agreed it would be effective for commercial notepaper, hats etc.

Bunkhouse Project

Jack McCuish reported his plans to date. He and Rudi will check the suitability of logs from Weyerhaeuser for the false ceiling. The large ploughs will have to be relocated.

Rudi will discuss with Charlie and see if the Farmers Institute could take them from us.

A work party with chipper cleaned up fallen debris on the trail on April 29. One more danger alder trees will be removed on the Beach Trail soon.

$600 was turned for in for firewood sales. Much thanks to Bill ... and his team.

Rudi reported that Lisa Kabani's proposal to Weyerhaeuser for the Museum to receive funding has netted $1500 and 20 T-shirts under Weyerhaeuser's "Making Waves" community service program. (This is in addition to their regular $1000 contribution). Society members expressed their appreciation to Weyerhaeuser.

Duncan Birt has begun carving a log with the museum name on it.

Rudi noted that the book by Richard A Rajala Clearcutting the Pacific rain forest (UBC Press, 1988) won the Charles A Weyerhaeuser Award and is very accurate book, good for research.

The need to remove most of the artifacts from the shelves wall behind the gift shop to display crafts-for-sale must be balanced with the need to have an "eye-grabbing" artifact item to be clearly visible to walking-by public. Several of the items are needed for the bunkhouse project. Perhaps a large saw could be displayed up high. To be resolved at the next in-museum work party.

With many videos now available for the public to view, a small screened viewing area is needed, preferably in view of the craft-shop attendant. To be built at the next in-museum work party.

Dave Florence reported that he had prepared a database entry sheets for Artifact and Photo Databases modeled on the PR History Society format. He recommended we proceed now for this long term project. Eventually we need a PC in a heated office to do searches. For now a three ring binder with handwritten sheets will be useful.

Rudi reported that Bob Marquis says he can get us a carving for the summer raffle.

Dave also checked out procedures and funding support for a summer student. We decided to wait for next year. The most likely support would be a BC grant of $4 per hour; our cost would be about $1300 for 10 weeks at 30 hours per week. Suggested tasks:

bulletOpen the museum on days when the Gift Shop people aren't there during late June, and July / Aug.
bulletContinue the Database project (recording of artifacts and photos)
bulletHelp prepare an information package for museum tour guides and Willingdon Beach Trail guided interpretive walk. (Interview knowledgeable Society members and record the results under guidance of a Committee)
bulletConduct guided tours and guided interpretive trail walk.
bulletDo minor cleaning/maintenance in the museum and on the trail.

Minutes of Meeting held 7 - 9 p.m., May 9, 2000 at the Museum

Gift Shop

Kathy reported they are on schedule for June 20 opening; with the same Tues./Thurs./Sat openings 2 -10 p.m.. Floor is painted. (Thanks, Richard Parker). Cabinets will be painted soon. Cabinet now open for a glass front. Rudi will arrange a phone installation.

New Business
