The Paradise Valley railway, operated from 1911 to 1918, as the first local
Bloedel, Stewart & Welch Ltd. railway. It went from Myrtle rocks north-west to Centennial,
then at a Y went south along the creek and through the golf course. It hooked
up to Paradise Valley road near West Lake (Hammil Lake), then
up McLeod Road past the Open Market to several spurs, with a total of 8.5
miles of track.
Bloedel, Stewart & Welch Ltd. (BS&W) was incorporated in B.C. on July 12, 1911 and
bought 10,000 acres (4000 hectares) of prime timber at Myrtle Point for
$100,000. They constructed Camp 1 at Myrtle Rocks, and Camp 2 where the
creek from Hammil (West) Lake crosses Padgett Road. They operated
in Paradise Valley from 1911-1928 using several logging locomotives. In 1918
a large fire in Paradise Valley halted operations, and with the best wood
gone, they kept the Myrtle Rocks terminus and re-routed the railway along
Duck Lake Road to Duck lake with many spurs.
